Emmy-winning Big Bang Theory actor Jim Parsons has publicly spoken about his relationship with long-time partner, graphic designer Todd Spiewak, for the first time.

The couple attended a Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) Respect Awards ceremony in Los Angeles last week to accept the organisation’s Inspiration Award.

“I’ve never considered myself an activist,” Parsons told the audience. “I’ve never considered my relationship with Todd to be an act of activism.

“Rather simply, it’s an act of love, coffee in the morning, going to work, washing the clothes, taking the dogs — a regular life, boring love,” he said.

Parsons went on to say: “Now all this said, no one is giving us an award for activism. I realise this. If we are indeed inspiration to others by simply being who we are and living our lives in the way that feels right to us then we have to thank the same people who help any other couple who continue a successful relationship – our friends and family.”

The couple live in Los Angeles with their dogs, Otis and Rufus.

It was first acknowledged that Parsons, who plays Sheldon Cooper in the popular sitcom, is gay in a New York Times article last year.

In September, during his acceptance speech for his third Emmy Award for Big Bang Theory, Parsons thanked Spiewak, who he described as his “favourite person on the planet”.

The 40-year-old star will next be seen in the upcoming film The Normal Heart with Mark Ruffalo and Julia Roberts.
