In celebration of the upcoming same-sex marriage of Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), the producers of Modern Family have come up with a unique publicity stunt.

Appearing on Good Morning America on Monday, Stonestreet and Ferguson helped announce that the show would foot the bill for all marriage licences and ceremonies at the New York City Clerk’s office that day.

Stonestreet said that working on a show like Modern Family, is “a rare opportunity as actors” because of its influence in changing hearts and minds

He added: “You never think of that when you’re out there auditioning for different parts in TV shows and not getting them, and then to finally get a gig like this that is really, truly – not to put too much importance on it, but owning it a little bit – having social impact, cultural impact. We hear it from kids, we hear that from parents, so we know it’s real.”

The highly anticipated TV wedding takes part over the final two episodes of the latest season of Modern Family and the producers appear to be aiming for more than just laughs; with a dramatic fallout between Mitchell and his father Jay (Ed O’Neill) over the nuptials.

“I actually really applaud the writers for going there with that relationship, because that’s something that’s very real, and a lot of parents have their own evolution with having a gay kid,” Ferguson told the Good Morning America team.

In July, Ferguson married Justin Mikita, his real life boyfriend of two years, in New York City.
