Advertorial

gay_flag_of_South_Africa_to_shoot_idahot_anti_homophobia_videoThe Gay Flag of South Africa team is coordinating a YouTube video shoot to mark the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT) tomorrow, 17 May, and they want you to take part!

IDAHOT is commemorated around the globe every year on May 17 to honour the day that homosexuality was removed from the International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organisation in 1990.

Tomorrow, the directors of the Gay Flag of SA will host a collection of friends, contacts and strangers at their Johannesburg home and ad hoc office to shoot the video, whilst posting social media updates on the day as the shoot progresses.

The concept of the YouTube video is to cover English singer Lily Allen’s 2009 protest song, Fuck You.

“Though the song was initially directed at George W Bush, we believe the lyrics are especially relevant when directed against Presidents Museveni of Uganda and Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria,” said Gay Flag of SA founder and director, Eugene Brockman.

The lyrics from the song go: “Look inside your tiny mind, Now look a bit harder, ‘Cause we’re so uninspired, so sick and tired of all the hatred you harbour…

“So you say, It’s not okay to be gay, Well I think you’re just evil, You’re just some racist who can’t tie my laces, Your point of view is medieval.”

The Gay Flag of South Africa team will be joined by Dineo Matebese, who is spearheading the anti-homophobia project, “I’m Your Ally.

“I’m supporting the Gay Flag SA on their IDAHOT initiative because I believe that it’s important to commemorate and remember that the pursuit for legal and social equality is still a task we must carry on with until those things are realised,” said Matebese. “That’s why I’m supporting the video shoot and what it means to me to be part of it.”

Brockman added: “Though we do have respect for the work that the Department of International Relations do and the agreement broader South African LGBTI organisations have made in terms with silent diplomacy on the Ugandan and Nigerian homophobic legislation, we feel that as a community we should still express our disgust and absolute refusal to accept homophobic legislation as acceptable state of affairs.”

The Gay Flag of SA invites you to add your face and voice to the video tomorrow. However, spaces are limited in the line up for the video, so please confirm with Brockman should you want to take part on 072 468 1171 or pinkhuge@gmail.com.
