Werner de Waal will represent South Africa

Delegates from 32 countries will be competing in the sixth annual Mr Gay World competition in the eternal city of Rome. From 24 to 31 August, they’ll take part in a variety of challenges, until one of them is crowned Mr Gay World 2014.

The organisers say that Mr Gay World is more than a beauty contest, stating that “it is the toughest job interview in the world! Mr Gay World celebrates the pride and rights of the international gay male.”

Mr Gay World cites its values as “friendship, diversity and respect” and states that the man selected “will be a role model and ambassador for young gay men of the world.”

Some of the challenges the delegates will face include a written test, a photo session, a sports challenge, a swim wear competition, an online popular vote, an art challenge, and a speech and strenuous “job interview” in front of seven judges from across the world.

This year, the following countries are taking part: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Cameroon, Canada, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Namibia, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Pakistan, Philippines, South Africa, Spain, Syria, United Kingdom, USA, and Venezuela.

South Africa has twice won the contest, in 2010 and 2011. Last year’s winner, Chris Olwage, is from New Zealand but was born in South Africa. This year, South Africa is represented by Werner de Waal, who won the Mr Gay South Africa title late last year.

South Africa will also present its bid to host Mr Gay World in Kynsna and Cape Town in 2015, (Johannesburg hosted the 2012 contest), at the Rome event.

Online voting for your favourite Mr Gay World 2014 delegate is now open until Saturday 30 August at 18.00 (6 PM GMT) here: mrgayworld.com/vote/. (You can vote once every 24 hours.)
