The man who accused Bryan Singer, the openly gay director of the X-Men movies, of abusing him as a teen has dropped his lawsuit.

In April, 31-year-old Michael Egan claimed that he was sexually abused by Singer when he was 17-years-old.

Singer, who was forced to drop out of promoting the most recent X-Men blockbuster to address the scandal, denied the claims.

On Wednesday, US District Judge Susan Oki Mollway allowed Egan to dismiss the lawsuit. Egan insisted that this was not because his case did not have merit but because he was struggling to find a new lawyer to represent him.

The news isn’t all good for the Hollywood A-lister, however. Singer had asked the judge to dismiss the suit “with prejudice” so that it couldn’t be re-filed, but the judge refused.

This means that Egan is allowed to bring the case back to the courts at another time should he wish to do so.

Singer’s lawyer, Marty Singer (no relation), told AP, “Although we would have liked the case dismissed on merits, the fact that now it’s dropped … is satisfactory. We’re pleased that it’s over.”

Egan, who was an aspiring actor at the time, claims that the abuse happened at exclusive sex parties in the late 1990s that featured young naked men for the pleasure of a group of Hollywood bosses.

Court documents alleged that Singer promised him roles in his films and forced him to take drugs and alcohol and to have sex against his will.

Egan had filed similar lawsuits against three other Hollywood executives he claimed were linked to the alleged teen sex ring, but has since also dropped those.
