A master’s student has won the coveted sixth annual Miss Gay Western Cape title in Cape Town.

Liberty Banks, also known as Glenton Matthyse, is studying for her Master’s degree in Human Rights Law at the University of the Western Cape.

She took the 2014 crown at a glittering pageant at the Baxter Theater in Rondebosch on Saturday.

The twelve contestants walked the stage in swimwear, themed wear and evening wear before the top five finalists were selected.

The audience was also treated to performances by the likes of Manila von Teez, Salome, Kat Gilardi and Anastacia Khan, and Threedivas Cabaret.

In her pageant bio, Banks said: “I am passionate about human rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people. I believe that every person is unique and that we all deserve to occupy our rightful, dignified places and spaces within society.”
