Just days after confirming their engagement, Stephen Fry has married his fiancé, comedian and writer Elliott Spencer.

Fry announced the happy news on Twitter on Saturday, posting two pictures of him and Spencer signing a marriage register book.

He captioned one picture: “Gosh. @ElliottGSpencer and I go into a room as two people, sign a book and leave as one. Amazing.”

The 57-year-old British actor, presenter, author and activist, confirmed earlier this month that he was planning to marry the 27-year-old Spencer following a newspaper report that the couple had made an application to marry at a registry office.

The romance sparked international debate about relationships that have dramatic age differences; there is a 30-year age gap between the two men.

Reacting to news of the nuptials, Fry’s friend and former co-star Hugh Laurie tweeted his congratulations: “Bloody hell it’s happened! @ElliottGSpencer has made an honest man of m’col. Love and happiness to all!!”

Fry was previously in a 15-year relationship with Daniel Cohen, which came to an end in 2010. He has often spoken about his struggle with loneliness, drugs and depression.

Fry is known for his roles in numerous films and TV series including Blackadder, V for Vendetta and The Hobbit, and as host of the comedy quiz show QI. He has over eight million followers on Twitter.
