An American Christian sports group has warned that the rumoured transitioning of reality star and Olympic gold medallist Bruce Jenner will send a “very bad message” to children.

Jenner, 65, has been the focus of unsubstantiated, invasive and often transphobic claims in the media that he is transitioning to a woman, something which he has yet to address or confirm.

Now, the Wisconsin Christian minister behind the 4 WINDS sports group, Steve McConkey, has jumped on the bandwagon.

In a press release, McConkey said that Jenner’s rumoured transitioning “is another indication of where sports is headed after the International Olympic Committee allowed transgenders in the Olympics in 2003.”

McConkey railed that “Jenner’s decision will only increase the confusion as kids look up to athletes as examples.” He further warned, somewhat out of context (transgender people are not necessarily homosexual) that “Christians will face discrimination if they believe homosexuality is a sin.”

The minister added: “An athlete of Bruce Jenner’s stature becoming a transgender will send a very bad message to the kids of America. Kids will have another sports hero who is confused and the saga will be broadcast throughout the world. Pray for Bruce Jenner and against television networks for promoting sin.”

Over the years, McConkey has proudly fought against the adopting of LGBT non-discrimination policies by the IOC and the United States Olympic Committee.

Jenner won his decathlon gold medal at the 1976 Olympics with a world-record 8,616 points. He had a brief television acting career before returning to the public eye in 2007 in the long-running reality series Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
