The homophobic head of the Catholic Church in the Dominican Republic has lashed out at the openly gay American ambassador to the Caribbean nation.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodríguez dismissed James “Wally” Brewster in mean-spirited and personal attack after the ambassador earlier criticised corruption in the country.

According to AP, Rodríguez stated that, “That man needs to go back to his embassy.”

He added: “Let him focus on housework, since he’s the wife to a man.”

Local media also reported that the senior clergyman asserted that Brewster was using his position to promote an “LGBT agenda.”

Rosanna Marzan, Director of Dominican LGBT group Diversidad Dominicana, told Washington Blade that the religious leader was continuing to “perpetuate homophobia in the country, and violence against women by relegating them to housework.”

The cardinal was previously critical of the ambassador’s appointment to the country two years ago, saying that gay people should not be diplomats.

He then called Brewster a “maricón,” which translates to “faggot.”

The diplomat has been married to long-time partner, Bob Satawake, since 2013. He is one of six openly gay US ambassadors around the world.
