Mariah Carey will be honoured for supporting the LGBT community just days after completing the South African leg of her Sweet Sweet Fantasy Tour.

The star is in the country to perform for local fans over the next few days. Her concerts kick off in Cape Town on Tuesday, and will be followed by one in Durban on Friday and two in Johannesburg on Sunday and Monday nights.

According to Channel 24, the singer has asked the city of Cape Town to bathe Table Mountain in purple lights during her performance.

After she returns to the US, the recently-engaged Carey is set to be awarded the Ally Award at the 27th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York on May 14.

“Carey has long embraced her LGBT fanbase worldwide, consistently sending messages of support in media interviews and gracing the cover of OUT Magazine,” said GLAAD. She has participated in GLAAD’s annual anti-bullying campaign, Spirit Day, wearing purple to show her support for LGBT youth.

The organisation noted that the global superstar “has tirelessly voiced her support for marriage equality”. Carey has also spoken lovingly about the important role a gay couple played in her childhood, saying they were “my template for a great relationship”. During a concert in 2009, she brought a gay fan onstage to propose to his boyfriend.

Previous GLAAD Media Awards honourees include Elizabeth Taylor, Patti LaBelle, Janet Jackson, Russell Simmons and Cher.

“Through her music and outspoken support, Mariah Carey has inspired and empowered countless LGBT fans across the globe,” said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “She is a longtime ally and friend to the LGBT community who has worked tirelessly to move acceptance and inclusion forward.”

The Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and producer has sold more than 200 million albums around the world.
