South Africa’s online gay radio station, GaySA Radio, is the broadcast sponsor for the 2016 Pretoria LGBTI Pride, to be held on 1 October.

GaySA Radio started broadcasting in October last year. Currently in test phase, the station is growing by leaps and bounds. It now has more than 30 volunteer staff, broadcasting from its studio in Pretoria.

Pretoria Pride is celebrating its fourth year and is becoming one of the premier prides on the South African LGBTI events calendar. From its modest inception a few years ago, the Centurion event has grown in size and last year attracted in the region of 7,000 participants.

The theme for Pretoria Pride 2016 is Raise Your Flag and during the parade GaySA Radio will formally raise its flag as the only LGBTI broadcaster, not just in South Africa but also on the continent of Africa.

As part of its sponsorship of the event, valued at R 250,000, GaySA Radio will present a weekly feature on Pretoria LGBTI Pride during the daily Eggs and Sausage Show. It will run advertising for the event and all its pre-pride activities, interview people involved in Pride, as well as provide listeners with updates and news about Pretoria Pride.

The GaySA Radio Team will also host a live broadcast during the event and will have a float in the parade.

“GaySA Radio wants to partner with successful LGBTI events of this nature not only to show our support, but to actively combat homophobia by bringing LGBTI issues into the mainstream,” said Hendrik Baird, the Operations Manager of GaySA Radio. “By supporting Pretoria LGBTI Pride we feel we are making a contribution to a culture of tolerance and understanding.”

Bruce Walker, organiser of Pretoria Pride, said the event aims to better its previous outing. “This year we will be having lots of shaded areas and a food area as well as bigger bars and a bigger flea market and community area, so bring blankets and chairs so you can enjoy the whole day,” he urged.

“We want as many people to be on the parade with a cash prize to the best outfit and float. We will be bringing you a whole day of entertainment and the biggest ever after party to hit Pretoria. Let us unite in unity this year and grow a stronger community. This event is for everyone and everyone is welcome. “

Pretoria LGBTI Pride takes place at the Centurion Rugby Club on 1 October 2016. Entry is free to the public. Club House seats are R 100 per person. LGBTI people are encouraged to bring family and friends to join the parade.
