Following calls for Frozen’s Elsa to get a girlfriend, there’s now an online movement to see the hunky Captain America start dating a guy.

The #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend hashtag was trending on Tuesday, with many fans of the superhero urging Marvel to pair him up with his longtime pal Bucky Barnes, seen most recently in Captain America: Civil War.

Jess Salerno, the student who started the hashtag, told Metro UK:

“I feel like it sucks that people in the LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] community don’t get the representation that they deserve.

“…it would be so amazing for something like Captain America or Marvel to be able to portray that,” she added.

Let’s face it, as a long-standing character, Marvel is unlikely to mess with Captain America’s well-affirmed heterosexuality, but there’s no doubt that it’s time we get a proudly LGBT superhero.

While there are a handful of such characters in the comic book world, none (other than the vaguely sexually fluid Deadpool) has been brought to the big screen.

“It’s getting increasingly difficult to ignore that LGBT people remain almost completely shut out of Hollywood’s big budget comic films that have dominated the box office over the past couple of years,” Megan Townsend, GLAAD’s entertainment media strategist, told AP.

Chris Evans, who plays Captain America in the movies, hasn’t commented about the calls for his character to get a little queer, but Idina Menzel, who voices Elsa, told Entertainment Tonight that she wouldn’t be opposed to her character having a girlfriend.
