Teen Wolf star Tyler Posey has admitted he messed up after posting a video on Friday in which he appeared to come out as gay.

In the Snapchat video (watch below), Posey stands near a sign for a street named “Gay St” and says: “This is me. I am this and this is me. I’ve never felt more alive. I’m gay!”

The clip left fans feeling confused, especially as Posey has previously identified as straight. So, was it a genuine coming out? Many thought it was, leading to a flood of media reports.

His coming out wouldn’t have been that much of a stretch. Two previous Teen Wolf stars came out over the past few months: Charlie Carver did it in January and Colton Haynes leapt out the closet in May.

To the heartbreak of Posey’s gay fans, however, it was all in jest. Many weren’t amused and were instead offended that he felt that coming out was something to joke about.

The 24-year-old quickly came under fire on social media for being insensitive.

Posey was forced to respond and apologise in a series of tweets: “I am a big proponent of love over hate, and standing together during divisive times.

“Although I’m not gay, I fully support the LGBTQ community. This was a moment intended to reflect that,” he wrote.

“And everyone, I am truly sorry to the people I’ve offended or lessened how big coming out is. I just want to spread love in this world,” Posey added.

On Sunday, he attended the Teen Choice Awards on behalf of Teen Wolf after it was named the Choice Summer TV Show.

During his acceptance speech, Posey appeared to address the controversy again, telling the audience” “I’m so full of love, and we love each other so much. We truly do love every single last one of you.”
