It’s a Festival of Colours for Miss Gay Jozi 2017

Gauteng’s most prestigious drag event returns on Saturday, 27 May to crown Miss Gay Jozi 2017 with a show-stopping celebration of beauty, spectacle and LGBT culture and identity.

Marking half a decade of wowing audiences and empowering contestants, Miss Gay Jozi this year goes back to where it was launched in 2013: Club Simply Blue; one of the city’s longest running LGBT nightclubs.

The larger and newly revamped venue offers an informal, comfortable and stylish space for the pageant, which once again promises to deliver a show of note.

The performance line-up includes the young and sexy Roaun Justin Powell; the dynamic Sjarmante Diamante; Labelz D’Glamore, the diva who delivers; Miss Gay Jozi 2015, Ycer; S.A.T. Divas; and the inimitable Dame Zsa-Zsa, who will also be the hostess for the evening.

“The Miss Gay Jozi pageant encourages the community to be proud and accepting of who we are,” says Pageant Director Dino Abrahams. “The event also greatly boosts each contestant’s sense of self-belief and confidence, helping them to make a difference in their world.”

The judging panel consists of Carla DeBouchet, make-up artist and human rights activist; Tshepang Lutshaba, Mrs Africa Nations SA 2017; Guiseppe De Gouveia, Divisional Leader at UCT Faculty of Health Sciences; Katlego Disemelo, Professional Researcher and Educator; Thabo Tee, Miss Gay Jozi 2014; and Ira Pillay, Miss Gay RSA pageant owner.

“The judges will be looking for someone who is dedicated to the title,” explains Abrahams. “They must be a Gauteng resident and willing to go the extra mile. They must be out and proud and exude poise and strength.”

This year’s theme is “Festival of Colours”, representing the diversity and energy of the LGBT community. Being held close to Africa Day (25 May), the pageant is also a commemoration of the Africanness of this community.

“At its core, Miss Gay Jozi is a proud affirmation that LGBT South Africans and Africans, in all their diversity, are indeed children of the continent and entitled to the same rights, dignity and opportunities as all others citizens,” asserts Abrahams.

LGBT Gautengers and their friends and allies are urged to attend Miss Gay Jozi 2017, not only for an entertaining and social night out but to also support the region’s unique drag culture.

Miss Gay Jozi takes place on Saturday, 27 May, 2017 at Club Simply Blue. The pageant starts with the red carpet at 7pm, hosted by Labelz D’Glamore, followed by the main event at 9pm. Naturally, the after party, to be held at Simply Blue, will be rocking till the morning.
