Sam Smith, one of the world’s biggest openly gay music stars, will be coming to perform in South Africa for the first time.

Big Concerts has announced that the acclaimed 26-year-old British singer-songwriter will bring his Thrill of it All Tour to the country in April 2019, and tickets go on sale this week.

The multiple Grammy winner will perform two shows in Johannesburg on the 13th and 14th of April at the Ticketpro Dome and two in Cape Town on the 16th and 17th of April at the Grand Arena, Grand West.

Taking to Twitter after the announcement, Smith wrote: “I am so excited to be bringing the tour to South Africa!!!!!!!!”

The singer first hit the charts as the featured vocalist on the 2012 Disclosure song Latch. In 2014, he released In The Lonely Hour, his heartfelt debut album, which has sold 13 million copies globally. The album included the smash hit Stay With Me a radio staple over the course of the entire year. Smith was nominated for six Grammys, of which he won four, including Song of the Year and Record of the Year.

He also recorded the 2015 James Bond theme Writing’s on the Wall which won the Golden Globe Award and the Academy Award for Best Original Song. His latest album, The Thrill of It All, has already sold 4 million copies.

Smith came out as gay back in 2014, when he revealed that the album In the Lonely Hour was “about a guy that I fell in love with last year, and he didn’t love me back.” He added that for him, being gay is “as normal as my right arm.”

When he won his Oscar for Writing’s on the Wall, Smith dedicated the award “to the LGBT community all around the world,” and said that “I stand here tonight as a proud gay man and I hope that we can all stand together as equals one day.”

Tickets for Smith’s South African shows, starting from R575, go on sale on Thursday 30th August at 9am. Discovery Card holders get an exclusive 48-hour presale from the 28th of August.
