GAY PORN STAR TEACHER GETS JOB BACK
Mon, 12 March 2012An American teacher who was fired when his past as a gay porn star came to light has been allowed to return to work.
Shawn Loftis, who worked in the adult film industry under the name of Collin O'Neal, left the business in 2010 to start teaching.
In April last year, officials at Nautilus Middle School in Miami, Florida, where he worked as a substitute teacher, discovered his previous career.
Loftis, who has a degree in international relations and a master's degree in public administration, argued that his porn antics were in the past and that they were not illegal, but to no avail.
His license to teach was revoked for failing to uphold regulations that demand that teachers "conduct themselves, both in their employment and in the community, in a manner that will reflect credit upon themselves and the school system."
Now, the Florida Education Commission has ruled that Loftis can return to teaching and can even apply for full time teaching posts.
"I'm proud of my state. I was really shocked that the state of Florida was going to do this. I'm happy," Loftis told LA Weekly.
"This is my past and I left it behind. I can use my experiences in life to teach kids. The key point is that they said when you go back to the classroom and a student brings this up to you, you will be able to handle that. I thought that was highly progressive of them," he added.
