ADDRESSING HOMOPHOBIA IN SA SCHOOLS

Tue, 14 August 2012

On the 6th and 7th of September, the very first Colloquium on Challenging Homophobia and Transphobia in South African Schools and Promoting Good Practice will be taking place.

The groundbreaking colloquium, or conference, is a joint initiative by Gay and Lesbian Memory in Action (GALA) and the Centre for Education Rights (CERT).

It will provide an opportunity for educators, researchers, activists and policy and public-opinion makers to discuss the scope and impact of homophobia and trans-phobia in education, to present new research and work-in-progress, and to share information on good practice in policy and programming to address this issue.

This is a unique and very exciting initiative, and is without precedent in the history of LGBTI advocacy in South Africa.

In our country, with its history of violence and discrimination, it is of the utmost importance that these issues be addressed, particularly within the education sector. It is also crucial to have as much engagement as possible from the broader LGBTI community as possible.

For more information, or to take part, contact Gabriel Hoosain Khan at GALA at hoosain.khan@wits.ac.za or on 011 717 1963.
