ARE YOU IN ON THE SECRET?
Tue, 16 October 2012
A group of creative youngsters have brought sexy back to the Johannesburg inner-city with the avant-garde Secret Circle party.
The Secret Circle Pride warm-up party took place on 29 September in Newtown’s party district, establishing the event as an exciting addition to the Joburg queer party scene.
The DJ line-up got the crowd bopping to the beats of Casioheart, DJ Grace Jones, The Fluffers, Rakkie, The Bear DJ and WWLD till the early hours of Sunday morning. The bands included The Dollfins, Flourish and super sexy Beach Party.
David Thorpe and Danielle Hitchcock of Beach Party had the boys and girls swooning over their smooth Cape Town looks, and even smoother sounding music. The queens of the scene themselves, the Gay Flag of South Africa and their performers, Genevieve le Coq, Lola Fine and Odi Diva, offered up a drag performance that had the crowd roaring with excitement.
Secret circle, with an emphasis on stellar fashion, dance, art and club-culture, promises to offer a new approach to night-life in Johannesburg. It aims to subvert and challenge the routine of queer party culture in Johannesburg, with a fresh burst of underground club-culture.
Events planner, Christopher van der Berg and his scene-smart friends, Eve Rakow, Jenali Skuse, Jade Zwane and Gabriel Khan, are excited at how this event has blossomed into a cheeky challenge to the queer scene.
The first Secret Circle party took place on 10 August this year, and was a roaring success, attracting a multi-racial, diverse crowd of artists, activists and everyone else in between.

The move to the inner-city, while making some party-goers nervous, has been seen by many others as opportune (in line with new developments on Juta Street and the Arts on Main area) as it reflects a trend of reclaiming space in the inner-city.
Secret Circle distinguishes itself from the mainstream queer places; it is a space somewhat edgier (being located literally on the edge of the inner city) but also somewhat more daring (with its irresistible underground entertainment). It is also a promising space, as it is located in a place accessible to the diverse groups of queer people around Johannesburg.
The success of the first party and the subsequent Pride warm-up party has led the organising team to create a permanent fixture every two months.
The next Secret Circle promises to be as sexy as the last, with similar entertainment but bigger, badder and far dirtier! It will be held on 24 November at 66 Carr Street in Newtown, Johannesburg, and is sure to get everyone geared for the summer holidays. The organisers aren’t giving anything away just yet for the next party, so you’ll need to watch this space.
