In general one has to take the critics on films very lightly – keeping in mind that every person’s comments are only accordingly to his/her preference and point of view, with some circumstantial factors like in what mood/frame of mind was the critic when watching the film.
To plead: ‘I urge you to resist’, to encourage viewers not watach any film, should not be in the hands of any critics. A review on a film should be seen as an instrument to get other people’s opinions and their point of view on a subject, and nothing more.

What nonsense. Now where exactly did your definition of a critic, or what he of she ‘should do’, come from? That kind of style of critique is exactly what’s wrong with journalism in SA. The best film reviewers have a strong viewpoint and a personality. If people don’t understand that a film review is (or should be) an entertaining and informative SUBJECTIVE perspective by an educated person in the field, then they are dim. Go read the press release instead!

MOST people’s experiences of film reviews are that, in general, they don’t agree with the reviewer’s comments (90% of the time). This is fact, and mostly because tastes differs. (Yeah I know unfortunately a lot of people will love slapstick shit whether it’s good or bad, but that is the reality of it). In some instances, however, one does agree with a review. But one has to see a film for him/herself to make up your own mind. A review is just a ‘guiding line’ by an educated person in the field (as you put it) to go by.
But, it is still not a critic’s job to ‘urge people to resist’ to go and watch film (or to urge them to do so), just because of his opinion.
(Let me guess, Captain is a friend of Christo Oberholzer…?)

I also felt that this movie could have been a great deal more than it was. I found the whole two-dimension aspect of the film quite challenging because you constantly had to think about what the hell was going on, and how everything fitted into one another.

The end result, however, didn’t work for me. I didn’t leave the movie thinking it was clever, but rather left it thinking it was irritating because there were certain elements that just didn’t match up.

Not like Sliding Doors, with Gwyneth Paltrow. Now that, I thought, was a clever movie in two dimensions.

So I would say go see and judge for yourself, but don’t fork out R38 for it. If anything, it’s worth going to hear Keanu’s delicious voice.
