apathy (again!). And still the greatest enemy is the one within - South African gay people by and large still exhibit seemingly little concern about their rights and are content to be victimised.
As ever we continue to reinforce negative stereotypes and feed homophobia so often.
Maybe change really should begin at home - we live in one of the constitutionally most advanced spaces on the planet - we have a great headstart on the rest of the world - we owe it to ourselves and those without our progressive democracy to acknowledge and strengthen what we have. Enough with the apathy !

In reply to xspurt.

a few issues... You've raised a few issues I'd like to comment on..

If gays are apathetic about promoting their rights, I think some soul searching is necessary.

- Does the desire to enforce our rights include pointless marches through suburbia in heels and boas by a small section of the community that claims to represent the entire gay community? If so, count me out...In my opinion, this is exactly the negative stereotypical promotion I'd like to see either discontinued or at the very least addressed publicly by a group of gays that clearly states the reasons for such opposition.

- Does it include a pointless picketing outside a police station without acknowledgement of the good the police HAS done for gay people? Where is the balance?

- We often shoot ourselves in the foot, as your article seems to suggest. The promotion of chem friendly, barebacking on sites like X files and others certainly doesn't do us any good (whether or not we acknowledge the rights of 'different strokes..').
So what are we doing about the promotion of our diversity?

What a pity there isn't a gay element in our community that shows the straights we too have a diverse background like they do.

Certainly we are apathetic!
