choosing how. I agree that celebrities should not live their lives in the closet, if only for their own sakes. But the trouble with celebrity outings is that it denies them the choice of when and how to come out.
out celebs can do so much good. I feel gay celebrities and prominent, respected gay people have a duty to come out of the closet.

It will go a long way to showing to otherwise ignorant people that gay people are not 'possessed', mad, deviant, ill or any of the other 'reasons' people use to explain away homosexuality.

Especially in the townships where the only people daring to be out tend to be flamboyant and showy, it would be great to have some of our gay sportsmen and women, musicians, actors, business people, lawyers show the world that gay people are not misfits. We already know who they are, it's time they were proud enough to be themselves.

I am gay, out, and now I'm working on my celebrity status... I will not be going back into the closet any time soon.

Celebrities coming out. I agree in some ways with the person who commented under "choosing how". We have freedom of choice in this country. Why on earth should we then prescribe to others when, how and wether at all - to come out. Who gives us that right? If celebs want to lead a double life, so what? Does it influence how I lead my daily life - definitely not - I couldn't give a blue flying peacock feather about who does what to whom, how many times and why! Just because some people have great coming out experiences, doesn't mean everyone else have them too.

I'm afraid I have to disagree.... I agree that celebs should not be forced out. I also agree that whether a celeb is out or not will make no difference to your life, but to the many who are still in the closet it could make a huge and positive difference.

Absolutely. I couldn't agree more, Ntsunda - and that is the point of the article: closeted celebs have the potential to make a substantial difference to us everyday folk who might still be in the closet and who lack a positive gay role model. As I said, I am completely against public outings, but if the question is asked directly, I expect an honest answer!
