It will go a long way to showing to otherwise ignorant people that gay people are not ‘possessed’, mad, deviant, ill or any of the other ‘reasons’ people use to explain away homosexuality.

Especially in the townships where the only people daring to be out tend to be flamboyant and showy, it would be great to have some of our gay sportsmen and women, musicians, actors, business people, lawyers show the world that gay people are not misfits. We already know who they are, it’s time they were proud enough to be themselves.

I’m afraid I have to disagree…. I agree that celebs should not be forced out. I also agree that whether a celeb is out or not will make no difference to your life, but to the many who are still in the closet it could make a huge and positive difference.

Absolutely. I couldn’t agree more, Ntsunda – and that is the point of the article: closeted celebs have the potential to make a substantial difference to us everyday folk who might still be in the closet and who lack a positive gay role model. As I said, I am completely against public outings, but if the question is asked directly, I expect an honest answer!
