We need to look at the sponsors of institutionalised homophobia in African countries.
Organisations and religious right wing groups like Transformation Africa, and Rick Warren’s P.E.A.C.E initiative are promoting ‘family values’ in Africa, and unfortunately have a lot influence with political leaders who are also members of charismatic conservative churches. One example is Preident Museveni of Uganda.
Who finances these organisations? Can we act by putting public pressure on their financiers?
The answer is YES!!
For exemple, in Cape Town, one of the biggest financial contributors to ‘christian causes’ is the Louis Group of Companies, who are property developers (Seef business properties), and also have wide interests in tourism through Blue Planet Travel, the Devon Valley Hotel etc.
They are also involved with His People Christian Church, which provided the logistics and money behind the ‘Marriage Aliance’ which opposed the legalisation of same-sex unions in SA.
Maybe it is time for the SA consumers to put pressure on these financiers of unsavoury politics!
