You are absolutely right, but sometimes it’s not possible to get the model that directly competes with the other cars lined up for a test, as was the case with the Koleos.
There is however very little difference between the petrol and diesel derivatives in terms of looks, specification and off-road capabilities, so most of my observations would be applicable to the diesel as well. The petrol vs diesel power output differs with one kW, with the diesel sporting much more torque, one of the main selling points for diesels.
Therefore, if off-roading is required, the Koleos in diesel guise would win this hands down as neither the Q5 or the XC60 was aimed at that market. That said, the bulk of SUVs and double-cabs sold in SA are 4×2’s, which means that it’s not a general requirement in its segment. It was with this in mind that the Volvo came out tops.
