Open vs activist. While I cannot speak about the rest of Africa, I know of quite a few open and out gay and lesbian politicians in South Africa besides Ian Ollis. While I have absolutely no problem with Ollis, I think the writer should perhaps differentiate between being open and being an activist.

In reply to James. As far as I am aware.... I think the author is correct. As far as I am aware Ian is the only elected public official in Africa who has publicly stated in a public forum that he is gay. I also know of a few DA politicians for example who are openly gay in their immediate circle but are not keen to say so in the media or in a public forum and have not done so. There is a distinct difference.
