Cate Butler, by e-mail: In the Mr Gay World competition, South Africa won and not only did we win but South Africa was chosen to host the event next year.

This is amazing considering the competition our country was up against. Yet it has barely been mentioned. As a lesbian, I am a part of a community outraged at this media blackout.

I will probably read about the winner and competition in one of the monthly gay magazines. It is unacceptable that as a proud gay woman I have to buy a magazine for gay people to read when a gay person does something outstanding.

Our country won an international event. That is news. You don’t have to be gay to be proud of it. You can be South African and be proud of this achievement.

Proud or not, not everyone will agree that it’s something to be commended (homophobia is rife) but it is news and it should be reported as such and let the masses take it from there.

Christina, honey, please relax your cheeks sweetie, and no, i’m not talking about the ones on your face! Be glad that there is something like a Mr. Gay World peagant, that we were able to send a contender and that the judges crowned him the winner! What more do you want?

Of course the mainstream papers and publications won’t report about this, as we homosexuals are the minority of the readers!!!

Maybe you should stop wasting your time complaining about this, and actually start a publication for the gay people to keep us all up to date with things such as these.

We have to get of the habit of ignoring our own internal issues, racial divide is a BIG problem within the gay community, remedy that first and stop sugar coating it to exempt yourselves from the prejudices of our own community.

The Mr. Gay World isnt even really a class act within itself… and please enlighten me as to how the previous Mr GSA/GW has inspired your average closetted males to be who they are? has he ever marched with in support of those who were slained due to homophobia/corrective rape? Instead he wants to prounce around attending Fabulous balls and events, thinking that is his mission…

The whole affair is a joke, quite frankly. So go and fight a cause that worth the effort, start at home, by looking in the mirror and making that change in attitude, behaviour and in kind.
