Unsure.... I see this in the same way as any "reality-type" competition. The contestants are well aware of what they are getting into, whether they're doing it for a chance at a fantasy wedding, true love or just publicity is debateable.....

As far as what it will do for the gay community, that is likely to bring both good and bad publicity, with the homophobics seeing it as a chance to have a go at all GLBT persons and others seeing it in a positive light because there have been many similar competitions for straight couples around the world, so therefore one could say that it at least gays are being given the same opportunities.

Personally, I have a son who married his partner in both a legal & religious ceremony 3 years ago and I don't think I would have been happy if it was my son marrying someone he hadn't even met.

Time will tell if this marriage will work after the excitement & glamour is over.

Good luck to all concerned!!

Publicity stunt. I think it is nothing more than a publicity stunt by the radio station. What message does it send out there? That we gays scream and shout for the right to marry, yet we take marriage so lightly that we would marry a person that we hardly knew.
Surely you would have gotten the same if they were a straight couple, yet nobody would have cared and that is a fact.
We are a minority, despised group, so surely this would look bad for people trying to find any reason to condemn gays, and we all know that there are MANY of those out there.

Gay relationships work differently to straight relationships, we all know that. To make a gay relationship really work takes a bit of a different dynamic from the partners. And knowing this, I'd say chances are VERY slim that this marriage would even last a year.

Obviously the radio station couldnt give a shit, nobody really knew about them until now, so it is good publicity, no matter what it does to the people involved

In reply to Ben.

...background. You have a valid point Ben.
I would just like to add that Heart is a small community station in the Western Cape. Their listener demographic is about 75% coulard, who form a large part of the gay community in the Western Cape.
Heart also had NO budget to promote this competition, so if it were not for this Mamba article, the rest of the country would never had known. Thus could not have been a publicity stunt.
We obviously do not share the same moral standards on marriage as our fellow family members who entered this competition.
