This is very true. I’m not very camp, most of the time. I do paint my nails, mostly blue, but often yellow, green, black or bright red. That said, I’m not scared to chip a nail while working on a car’s engine. I wear eye-liner too, sometimes. Without the make-up, most people find it hard to believe I’m gay. This is who I am. I do as I please. I’m sorry if they’re so narrow minded that they take offence, but I am NOT sorry for who I am or what I do! There is no label that describes me, and no box into which I fit. There are many facets to me, that their over-zealous judgement will cause them to miss out on.

This is so tired. I am who I am. I cannot help it that straight men want to act like me. I did not ask to be butch. I am laughed at by my gay friends because try as I may I cant do camp. Can someone help me?

I agree with your thoughts ath once we’ve let go of our “closet” we feel free to become more camp and embrace that. Some might even revel in taking it to extremes. Obviously not everyone has the same experience, but a number of the friends I had before I came out think that I’ve “gay-ed it up” since then. I sometimes wonder if that if because straight people simply view me in a new light or whether I really have become more camp. Either way, I feel a lot more comfortable being me.

Great article! And very true. The whole camp/butch thing is so well worn that gay people don’t even question it anymore.
