It is very sad that the gay 'community' in the more affluent parts of our cities demonstrates exactly the same kind of racism as the rest of South African society. We need to admit that we have a problem with racism and ask what we can do to overcome it. Unfortunately things like pride have become depoliticised at the very moment when we need queer politics the most.

I think this is a great article. With my humble background and my current status I can say I have and continue to see this. I may be crucified in saying this but that neglect coupled with internalised homophobia isolates us as factions in society rather than strengthening or stance as a unified group of people.

I also agree with Danie on some points. I would say as an African, not specifically South African and I think by us supporting only localised factions do we subjegate and alienate ourselves enough to be discriminated by the non queer community.

Thought provoking article. As a South African I believe that I should care about all the injustices that occur, and I admit that I fail to do so. Would there be greater value in my 'caring' if it is based on a more close-knit gay community, or would that not just serve to alienate us more from the non-queer community?
