I would advise women to please leave the lid up. It is so annoying to find a toilet where the lid is down. That means I actually have to lift it myself.

It might not be about making a political statement, but it’s disingenuous to pretend their is no political aspect to this. A fight for equality is ALWAYS has a political side to it. Negativity is to be expected in these issues, people simply don’t share the same sentiments. I’m kind of conflicted about it. Not gender equality – I’m all for that! But special toilets seems like a divisive move. As it stands, public buildings need to provide toilets for males, females and people with disabilities. If you follow this to its logical conclusion; at some point you’ll want non-gendered toilets added to the list as well? I maintain that toilets are already non-gendered. They’re biologically biased, of course! People with vaginas don’t need urinals and people with penises don’t need sanitation bins. That’s not an issue of discrimination.I guess I just feel that the tens of thousands of rands used to make them (kitchens and toilets are the most expensive parts of a building) would be better spent in changing peoples attitudes. Literally the only difference between the toilets you want and those that already exist are the stickers on the door and the people who use them.

I don’t understand how or why gender-neutral bathrooms could/would offend anyone. Unless someone tried to force you to use such a bathroom… how could it negatively affect you?

Some of us would like to have the option of gender-neutral bathrooms, and not everyone who would like this is even transgender or intersex. It’s not as though gender-neutral bathrooms are replacing male-only or female-only bathrooms.
