Actually, there is a cure for Hepatitis C discovered since December 2015 – a one month treatment with a drug developed by Gilead. The point is well-taken though that prophylaxis against HIV is no protection from STI’s or pregnancy of course; condoms remain the best intervention. After 20 years of programming condom use in South Africa is no more than 40% and people are dying so this drug could save a lot of lives.

There is no robust evidence showing any causal association between tenofovor and an increased risk of cancer in humans.

HIV, on the other hand, is a major cause of increased cancer risk. Preventing HIV with PrEP could thus reduce the overall risk of cancers, although this needs more research. PrEP has been shown to be safe and effective in multiple well conducted clinical trials and in real world settings. None of these programs reported an increase in cancer risk.

PrEP does provide excellent HIV protection if the pills are taken properly. Condoms should still be used to provide protection against STIs such as gonorrhoea, chlamydia, syphilis and viral STIs including hepatitis.

Sex without a condom can theoretically lead to hepatitis C transmission but this is a less common form of transmission. Most transmission occurs among people who inject drugs or among HIV positive MSM. It is correct that there is no vaccine to protect against Hep C, but it is very treatable with cure rates of about 95%.

Fact: PrEP was found to be carcinogenic (causes cancer) in tests on rats.
People might stop taking PrEP in 10 years time when everyone starts getting cancer from the PrEP medication.
Sex without a condom can give you “hepatitis C”, even if you are taking PrEP.
Hepatitis C is a Chronic disease, there is no vaccine, it cannot be cured by medication, and it doesn’t disappear.
The World Health Organization says: “130–150 million people globally have chronic hepatitis C infection. Approximately 500 000 people die each year from hepatitis C-related liver diseases.”

In reply to Lunga. Hi Lunga, Studies have shown that you SHOULD have coverage within 4 days. Most sources suggest seven days after first tablet, if you take it EVERY day, will give you coverage.

This is the step in the right direction. I am so proud of our country for making all these medical precautions available. I do have one concern though that many citizens could be exploiting the availability of these health resources. I do think that we must figure our a way of promoting everyone to live healthier lifestyles so that the strain on the public health sector can be relieved to a certain degree. Perhaps we have become a bit spoiled for choice and options. Something to think about.
