Take away the difference between a civil union and a marriage. Then all marriage officers can solemnise gay marriages. It will take away 80% of the problem.

This is nonsense. Does our Government really want to move one step ahead and six backward? In which way does a gay relationship/civil partnership/marriage harm other people? The fact that some people dislike the idea on religious or other grounds, still does not imply that this union can be denied on humanitarian grounds. No one, but no one, whether in government or not, does not know gay people or have family members who are gay. Any form of prejudice is counterproductive and intrinsically wrong. Apartheid does not only imply race. If people want to practice Apartheid on the grounds of sexual or gender issues, they are no better than what we suffered and had to endure until 1994.

Do we only focus on things when they affect us? Every person (L-G-B-T-I-Straight) who believes in equity for all has a moral duty to comment and ensure parity. Ultimately none of us get to serve only certain customers – no matter what field we may be in. We often deal with people who are contrary to our own values and beliefs but we are duty bound to do our jobs to the best of our abilities. How on earth public servants feel they should be exempted when their salaries come out of the taxes paid by the very people they are discriminating against; is insane. These public servants either do their job or they don’t (ie not as they do now, but they are replaced). We have a plethora of unemployed, willing and able people who will get on with the job at hand. It has nothing to do with conscience – after all if conscience dictated, most of us would turn many clients away. Silence does = death (death of freedoms, of liberty, of human rights).

Let others live and love as they choose. Depriving them the right to make their union legally a lifelong thing isn’t it.
