In a major coup for local drag fans, a different RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant will be performing in Joburg and Cape Town once month for the rest of the year.
The first queen to grace the stage will be Season 10 star Dusty Ray Bottoms, who will appear at Babylon – The Joburg Bar on 18 January and at Zer021 Social Club on 19 January.
Local drag queens will appear at both venues as supporting acts “as the intention is that at each show two South African queens will be given the opportunity to also share the stage with the guest,” says Barry Reid, Director of MVT Productions.
“The queens will also be involved in outreach programmes and get the opportunity to see our beautiful country, all in the hope of luring more and more of the LGBTI supporting community to our shores,” he adds.
About Dusty Ray Bottoms
Bottoms, who is being hosted in South Africa by S & S Productions and MVT Productions, was born Dustin Rayburn and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. He spent his childhood performing in community and high school theatre and ultimately attended Wright State University for Musical Theatre.
After being sent to a gay conversion therapy camp by his parents, Dustin packed up a suitcase with just a few bucks in his pocket, and set out for New York City.
The son of a preacher man, with musical theatre training and a punk rock soul, Dustin’s unique point of view and style of story-telling had finally found a home. And thus, Dusty Ray Bottoms was born!
Dusty grabbed the attention of NYC nightlife with her showstopping performances and went on to star in music videos, an international MAC Cosmetics ad campaign and, of course, in Season 10 of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
