There is just over a month to go until the 3rd annual Miss Drag South Africa pageant. The event will be taking place on the 4th of October in Pretoria, at the State Theatre, Arena Venue.
The pageant first launched as a national competition in 2017, which saw Zilin Ayoki crowned as the inaugural winner. Following in her footsteps is the reigning queen for 2018, Miss Vicky, from the friendly city, Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape.
Cape Town-based pageant director and owner, Enigma von Hamburg, visited Gauteng last month to finalise the arrangements as the excitement is in full swing for this gathering of beauties.
“This platform is much more than just a beauty contest or modelling competition,” says von Hamburg. “It highlights the aim of ‘Drag with a Purpose’ which is to inspire ordinary people who carry out extraordinary things to continuously advocate for the advancement of LGBTQIA+ rights and our drag culture, serve as agents for change and uplift their communities by serving as positive role models.”
The 10 finalists are also all gearing up for the crowning gala while focusing on their ‘Drag with A Purpose’ initiatives.
Von Hamburg explains that this year, the ‘Drag with A Purpose’ projects will represent 40% of the overall results. This encourages participants to actively strive to uplift their communities and to act as LGBTQIA+ leaders. The pre-judging interviews will weigh 25% while the crowning gala results will weigh 35% towards the final outcome.
The contestants will strut their stuff in a national costume, swimwear and evening wear and will face a question round before the top 5 are announced. The top 3 contestants will go head-to-head in a final question round to determine whom of the best of the best is to be chosen to carry the title forward.
The finale celebrations on Friday will continue into Saturday, the 5th of October, where everyone will join in on the Pretoria LGBT Pride March and festivities.
