Johannesburg Pride 2024 Announces Venue Change
The 35th annual Johannesburg Pride will return to the streets of Sandton, following a recently announced change of venue.
In June, organisers had stated that the event would take place on 26 October at Wanderers Cricket Stadium, a location that proved popular last year. However, the venue has now been moved to Sandton for 2024.
“Due to the ICC Cricket World Cup scheduling in South Africa, we’ve had to make the bold decision to move our event from Wanderers Stadium to the vibrant heart of Sandton. This shift, while unexpected, has reignited our passion for taking Pride back to bold spaces!” the Johannesburg Pride Team said in a social media post.
“We apologise sincerely for the inconvenience caused, but we are committed to a change that is better. This year’s celebration is more than just an event; it’s a milestone. We believe that this change will not only preserve the spirit of Pride but elevate the experience to new heights, marking our 35th anniversary in the most memorable way!”
The organisers added that they are working tirelessly to finalise the details and have promised “to deliver the same electrifying energy, inclusivity, and joy that you’ve come to expect from Johannesburg Pride.”
They assured that “Sandton will be transformed into a safe, celebratory space where our community can come together and shine brighter than ever before.”
Further details will be shared in the coming weeks.
The first Pride march in Africa took place in Johannesburg on 13 October 1990, making this 35th anniversary a significant moment in the continent’s LGBTIQ+ history.
