Why do haters target such a small, marginalized minority that is not a threat to anyone? They are just trying to be safe, to live their lives in peace. As an Afrikaanse, South African mom with a transgender child, I know firsthand how difficult this journey is and I have personally met many wonderful transgender people. It’s a medical difference! Not a trend, not a contagion, not a moral failing and not a lifestyle choice. Gender is not binary, gender diversity has always existed.

I implore you to have some empathy and compassion and to pause and think… what if it was your child? Or grandchild? To think before you just join the side of misinformed prejudice, discrimination and oppression. Before you celebrate and rejoice in someone else’s pain and mistreatment.

Yes, some people are different from the norm and that is okay. Not everyone is born heteronormative, neurotypical and cisgender. But that is not a threat to you. Just extend the same kindness as you would expect someone else to show your own child.

Please just stop hating and hurting my child. She has never hurt anyone. Yes, she is transgender and autistic and different from most. She is also bright, and gifted, and creative and the kindest and sweetest person. Walk a mile!
