What’s all the fuss?. I personally do not know what all the fuss is about. At the end of the day pride means different things to different people. So many people judge others based on their own feelings and perceptions without considering that there may be another side to the story. The fact is, while we may all be gay, not all of us are concerned with the same things that being gay comes with. Personally I am not interested in broadcasting my homosexuality to the world because i do not see what difference it makes. This is not a matter of pride, nor fear – If I am asked I am honest but I do not want to be defined by my sexuality alone as I am so much more than just a gay man. If I have pride in myself it is not because I am gay, but rather because I am good man. This being said, if someone else wants to fly their flag there is nothing wrong with it at all because we all define ourselves differently even if we all walk around with the “gay” label. I just don’t understand why people have to condemn others becuase their feelings are different. What i feel has no bearing on anyone else’s life unless I force it down their throat, and even then it is unlikely to change their mind about anything, so what’s the point?

it shouldn''t even be an issue, if you want to attend or not, do as you want to. But we homosexuals should not EVER be afraid or ashamed of being who we are, i go because i''m a proud gay man, i''m not a queen, i''m just a normal guy. And it''s always a great party! Yes there are drag queens and all sorts of strange outfits, but mostly just every day people enjoying themselves! And the annual event just emphasizes that we are here and others shouldn''t forget it! We all are equal!
Those people who have issues with going or being seen there clearly have issues with themselves being homosexual, whether it''s religious or whatever, it''s just sad!
Isay be proud and have fun - that''s what Pride is about!

In reply to Rolando. Agreed with Rolando. It seems that the attack on Coenie has nothing to do with the article but is actually personal. That''s very infantile. If you have a problem with him, sort it out with him and leave Pride out of it.

In reply to sebastian. Yes, but.... True, some of Coenie''s points are not entirely coherent, but some are very correct indeed. His points about how we need to ensure that our rights are maintained, the fragility of the constitution and the current hostile environment for many gays and lesbians in SA are absolutely correct and relevant. The vehemence with which you choose to dismiss the entire piece because of some of its weaknesses smacks of a rather set and rigid perspective on the issue.

And no, I was not attacking Kukkard “personally” – I was making some points about the dreadful – and in the context disquieting – feebleness of his arguments…If “we” – and Kukkard doesn”t pause to consider the implications of that (Yawner does) – can”t mount a logically coherent and compelling argument for the thing, what hope.. A media event with no media coverage?

What a lot of crap!. Sebastian worded it well. To add to his reply, I fail to understand why Coenie "prods" until he gets a reply unless it''s because he likes being provocative about a now oh-so-boring subject. I dislike his one sided reasoning. I have been to a few Prides, beginning with the very first. Lately, they have become a bit of an overhyped money making racket in my opinion. Worse, the politics surrounding some of the organisation just irritated me. Then there are the exclusivist tents or demarcated areas for the ''deserving'' supporters, sponsors or media.. Yawn. I DO go to the Pride from time to time - certainly not every year - and certainly not out of an indignant sense of an "I''ll Show-You" type of Pride. I go because occasionally I bump into an old acquaintance, and perhaps - just perhaps - there may be someone who will look back at me (See, I get real too!). Frankly, Pride is a bit like 7de Laan... skip a few episodes or marches, and you haven''t missed much. Perhaps it serves a purpose for the younger set which still struggles with identities, or those whose cultures or religions preclude them from a sense of participation. Yawn again.. I couldn''t care less about the political opinions of Quelane or Zuma.. I was gay before them, and I''m still gay. I have NOTHING to prove. I certainly won''t be told why I MUST go to Pride. The article''s tone is patronising and contradictory.. Why not INVITE people to Pride for better reasons than provide unsubtle political rantings in the article? I feel another yawn coming on... better still I might consider marching around the Brooklyn police station.. Now THAT Coenie, would make a little more relevant statement! Pride Shmide.. (Hmm, I think I''ll consider going after all..)
