“Their” is a gender neutral pronoun that is used to denote both singular and plural.
Eg: “I saw a person get out of their car and walk to the front door.”

There is nothing gramatically incorrect about the usage of “their” in the article. It just sounds different to you because the default tends to be gendered pronouns, so that is what you are used to.
