The Johannesburg Queer Chorus returns to the stage with two performance of its show ICONS, taking place at 15:00 and 19:00 on 27 June 2026 at the Roodepoort Theatre. This season’s production is a celebration of rebels, rule-breakers, and cultural trailblazers whose work reshaped music and society.
From Brenda Fassie to Johnny Clegg and Madonna, ICONS honours artists who challenged convention and expanded the boundaries of identity, sound, and culture.
Musical Director Faye explains the heart of the theme:
“Progress often happens when people are willing to be different, take risks and challenge the status quo… we wanted to honour the progress, change and enlightenment these icons inspired.”
The production also explores the relationship between queer joy and resistance, with Member Relations representative Jess noting:
“Joy is made possible through resistance, but also how resistance can and must be powered by joy.”
The chorus highlights how LGBTQIA+ communities have long shaped cultural movements, often driving innovation and visibility before mainstream recognition. As Faye puts it:
“Queer culture has been a driving force behind many musical, political and cultural movements… celebrating authenticity, self-expression and resilience.”
Beyond celebration, ICONS also reflects on South Africa’s ongoing social realities. The themes of resistance, pride, and possibility remain deeply relevant in a country still navigating inequality and identity.
Jess adds a contemporary lens: “The world is shaped by culture, and culture is shaped by people.”
Ultimately, ICONS aims to leave audiences uplifted and connected, carrying forward the energy of shared experience. As Ati from Media Relations sums it up:
“Joy and connection. We pour our hearts out on the stage and hope that the energy of the music carries audiences into a shared moment of reflection and celebration.”
With soaring harmonies and a fearless programme, ICONS promises a night that honours those who dared to imagine something greater and sang the world into change.
