Soweto Pride returns this September for its 22nd anniversary, bringing together LGBTQIA+ communities, allies and supporters under the theme “iSango lenkululeko – Our Heritage”.
As South Africa marks 50 years since the Soweto Uprising and reflects on 30 years of constitutional democracy, this year’s Pride invites us to consider what heritage means, whose stories are remembered, and the kind of society we want to build.
Ahead of the main Pride weekend, Soweto Pride has announced a series of build-up activities focused on storytelling, solidarity, faith, creativity and queer visibility.
Black Burns Fast Film Screening
Hosted with FEW, Hola Africa, GALA and IRANTI, the screening of the South African queer coming-of-age film Black Burns Fast will use film to create space for reflection, conversation and community connection.

25 September – Soweto Pride March
The Soweto Pride March takes place on 25 September, with participants gathering at KwaLichaba Chesa Nyama Orlando West Soweto for the start of the march.
The march calls for safer communities, social cohesion, access to justice and the meaningful implementation of constitutional rights. It also honours LGBTQIA+ people who have lost their lives to hate crimes.
26 September – Queer Joy Celebration
Soweto Pride concludes on 26 September with the Queer Joy Celebration at KwaLichaba Chesa Nyama Orlando West Soweto.
The celebration will bring LGBTQIA+ people, families, allies and supporters together through music, culture, entrepreneurship and community.
As FEW Executive Director Jade Jamilla Madingwane puts it: “We are human beings first. Before labels, before differences, before politics, we all deserve dignity, safety and respect.”
From film and dialogue to marching and celebration, Soweto Pride 2026 will honour the heritage of LGBTQIA+ activism while creating space for the community’s future.
