Pretoria’s Francois Nel has taken the 2010 Mr. Gay South Africaâ„¢ title at the sparkling Grand Finale ceremony at Gold Reef City Casino in Johannesburg on Friday.

Nel, a 28 year old make-up artist, hair stylist and business owner, told Mambaonline that he was “in shock” after scooping the coveted title; being both a favourite of the judges and receiving the most SMS votes from the public.

He describes himself on the Mr. Gay South Africa website as a “sporty, fun loving, funny, gay, men loving, woman pleasing and ambitious career boy at heart”.

Nel – who also took the Mr. Personality, Bone Wear Model of the Year and Mr. CW Designer Jewellery 2010 titles at the ceremony – has big shoes to fill; his predecessor Mr. Gay South Africa 2009 Charl Van Den Berg went on to win Mr Gay World in February in Oslo, Norway.

Hosts Jason Greer and Cathy Specific

Nel won a week away in Phuket, a bursary, jewellery and numerous other prizes. He will also take part in the Mr. Gay World 2011 competition in Manila, The Philippines, in March next year.

The first runner-up was model, actor and business developer André Lammers from Cape Town while singer, writer and programme coordinator Karl-Heinz Michel from Centurion was the second runner-up.

Before awarding the titles, the Mr Gay World Director for Africa, Ireland’s Brian Merriman, told the audience that he is lobbying to hold the international pageant in South African in 2012.

The Grand Finale was hosted by television personality Jason Greer and Cathy Specific with performances by pianist Rocco de Villiers and DJ Miza with Flabba and an appearance by actress Lizz Meiring.

Yep Tshepo is a man and pageant material but bare in mind, its not a colour criteria, it’s about all of them, how they present themselves, how they look and upstairs counts too. As for the “Princess” please give us a break. ITS A NO NO NO!
The winner is a good choice of the lot, mature and goodlooking, so i dont know what you are on about. Black this, black that???????? Black your damn brain. Some of us dont give a shit!

        1. What a great Dark Dude. Now THIS is the attitude that WE ALL should have or strive to have, whities and black brothas, and ESPECIALLY us queers.
Why do we still give a shit what colour someone’s skin is, and why do we make it an issue? We have enough shit from the outside to also take on race issues within the gay community. We are ALL family, are we not?

Thanks, Dark Dude, when I grow up, I want to be like you. Imagine what a fantastic country this would be if we ALL had that attitude…
