In a rally in Maine on Monday, singer Lady Gaga called for the US military to throw out homophobic soldiers instead of gays and lesbians.

The event, organised by the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, took place on the eve of a failed bid to begin a Senate process to recall the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ ban on gay and lesbian personnel.

“Doesn’t it seem to be that the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ is backwards? Doesn’t it seem to be based on the Constitution of the United States that we’re penalising the wrong soldier?” Gaga (24) asked the 2000-strong crowd.

“Doesn’t it seem to you that we should send home the straight soldier who hates the gay soldier? The straight soldier whose performance in the military is affected because he is homophobic. The straight soldier who has prejudice in his heart in the space where the military asks him to hold our core American values.”

“I’m here today because I would like to propose a new law. A law which sends home the solider which has the problem. Our new law is called, ‘If you don’t like it, go home’,” Gaga added to cheers from the audience.
