TREVOR NOAH RESPONDS TO GAY JOKE UPSET

ComedianTrevor Noah

South African comedian and Mambaonline Sexiest Man 2009 finalist Trevor Noah has responded to criticism over a gay joke that he made on Twitter.

The popular entertainer’s joke, which appears to have been removed, went: “When gay guys are about to have sex, do they shout ‘shotgun’ to see who gives first?”

According to gossip blogger Mika Stefano, the joke immediately drew flack from a number of people and was even slated by 5FM DJ Grant Nash, who commented on Twitter: “Stupid offensive question dude.”

Noah said in a statement to Mambaonline that “with regards to my Twitter post I do not regret saying it, however I do regret not wording it better and I regret that it offended many from the gay community.

“As a comedian I am always attempting to do two things, make people laugh, and strike a chord. My intention is never to hurt individuals or minority groups although sometimes this happens unintentionally.”

He added that, “Many gay men I’ve met have said to me – ‘we are regular guys with a certain sexual preference, that doesn’t mean we should be treated different!’ I guess that doesn’t apply to all because this was what it was, a silly joke meant to poke fun just like all the others.”

Do you find Trevor’s joke offensive? Has it changed your opinion of the comedian? Give us your feelings on the matter, below.

  1. People really need to grow up!!. What is the fuss about?

By reacting to this kind of thing, we as a community give other people the power to hurt us.

I don’t mind people jokingly referring to me & my SO as moffies etc. If I get upset, I actually give them the power to hurt me. I *choose* not to. Having a victim mentality isn’t doing the community any favours.

  2. i agree. joke is more offensive for being unfunny. Humour is sophomoric moronic. Shotgun? Ass fucking “jokes”? Way sophisticated! Methinks the crowns on the heads of the likes of Sykes and Gervais is particularly safe from the reach of 2nd rate SA (un)funnymen.

  3. ps. have also heard equally unfunny and borderline offensive drivel from Vlismas and Gareth C. Just can’t see any potential humour at our expense beyond ass fucking jokes.

  4. …. Grant Nash said it best: “Stupid offensive question” and it was! Simple.

But it’s typical of 2nd rate performers though to resort to gutter comedy in order to be funny (or not funny in this case). It’s how they stay in the media spotlight and achieve a modicum amount of publicity for their stalled / stalling careers.

  5. Aiee guys!. aiee guys! chill with them barbs. it is really just a joke! we should also just find jokes about straight people as well. Even lame jokes Like: What does a straight couple do 4 minutes after a sex date? Answer- nothing- the sex is done and they have nothing to talk about!
C’mon- each responded should cum up with a lame str8 joke!

  6. Boy, are we a sensitive bunch!. Come on guys, we make “blonde” and “dumb men/women” jokes all the time! Can we please not be so sensitive and pc? We’re people. Period. We make fun of eachother but it should never be hurtful. I don’t think this was either. Maybe in some stretched post-modern way he’s trying to use humor to understand us and our practices. I for one have no problem with that, because it shows he can comfortably joke about it, instead of insukting it and being threatened by it. But then again, depends on whether you allow yourself to be hurt by it or not, as previously said. We’re waaay too sensitive about it, no wonder they call us sissies!! Everything a straight person says offends us, when they’re infact trying to understand us by joking with/about us.

  7. Trevor Noah’s joke. I don’t think the gay community will ever move on if we take offence at every little joke or comment. We’ve got to learn to think out of the box……

  8. HAHAHAHAHAH that joke is tooooo funny!! people should stop taking offence to pity things? I am blonde, and i don’t go home crying cause of silly blonde jokes…seriously if you take offence so easy is it not maybe cause of a guilty consciouns?

  9. Jeez. I thought that was funny. So did my husband of 25 years. So funny in fact that in a moment of ‘togetherness’ he shouted shotgun the other night!
