Thomas Beatie, the controversial transsexual man who gave birth to a daughter earlier this year, is set to release a book chronicling his experiences.
Beatie divided public opinion in April with his announcement that he was seven months pregnant. Along with his wife Nancy, he recounted his story on The Oprah Winfrey Show, drawing Winfrey’s largest TV audience of the year.
Thirty four year old Beatie was born a woman, but began to live as a man 10 years ago. He had his breasts removed and began testosterone treatments, although he retained his female reproductive organs. He is legally recognised as a man.
According to the book’s publisher, Seal Press, Beatie’s book Labor of Love “is a groundbreaking book because it tackles social, political, and legal questions about gender, marriage, and family.
“Thomas and Nancy’s uphill battle to have a baby is both fascinating and touching. They are a normal couple who wanted a family, and yet the circumstances surrounding their desire to get pregnant and their journey to get there are truly extraordinary.”
The book will be released in the US next month.
