FIRST-EVER SOMALI GAY WEBSITE LAUNCHED

Advertorial

A group of Somalis in the UK have launched the first-ever gay Somali website, which is targeted at gay Somalis around the world.

The website is run by Somali Gay Community, an organisation established in 2005 and based in the United Kingdom.

Now with the organisation’s new website, the group aims to reach LGBT Somalis around the world.

“The goal of the group is to create a space and a means for Somali gays and lesbians access to information, share experiences and develop support networks,” Murad, the Project Manager of Somali Gay Community, told afrol News.

He added that the site will serve as a guide to “our brothers and sisters confronted with their same-sex affairs.” The website includes information about homosexuality in Islam, news, support services, a message board and a poetry section.

Homosexuality is illegal in Somalia – a predominantly Muslim country – with gay sex punishable by up to three years imprisonment.

“We feel deeply for those living back home in Somalia and lacking the freedom we enjoy here in the west. To them we would like to show our solidarity and support,” says an introduction to the organisation on the website.
