Pietermaritzburg’s Gay & Lesbian Network will be hosting a series of events to help the understanding of transgender, transsexual and gender non-conforming identities and issues.
The workshops and training, aimed at staff and the public, are being conducted in association with the Cape Town based transgender organisation, Gender Dynamix.
The network said that it identified the need to train staff and volunteer counsellors on transgender issues so as to sensitise them on transgender needs.
“This came about from calls from the helpline and face to face counselling of people who identified as transgender,” said the organisation in a statement.
The workshops will include training of staff and volunteer counsellors and a public workshop with a possibility of establishing a support group for transgender people.
The public workshop, exploring the origins of transgenderism and what it means to be transgendered, will take place on Friday, 26th September at the Bessie Head library auditorium, in Pietermaritzburg, from 13h30 – 16h30.
The meeting to establish a transgender support group in the area will be held on Saturday, 27th September.
