US VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE TO ADDRESS GAY GROUP
Barack Obama’s running mate, Senator Joe Biden, will be the featured speaker at a dinner held by America’s largest gay rights group.
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) announced that Biden will address the organisation’s Twelfth Annual National Dinner in Washington D.C. on October 4th.
“I’m honoured to participate in this event. Discrimination has no place in this country and I am proud to stand with HRC in the fight to end it,” said Biden in a statement.
“Barack Obama and I will bring the change we need in Washington. The Bush Administration’s policies have been disastrous for the LGBT community and a McCain Administration would just mean four more years of the same.”
More than 3,000 people are expected to attend the event, which will also feature personal finance expert Suze Orman, other political speakers, a silent auction and entertainment.
Senator Biden has a record of fighting for and supporting issues of equality, including opposing a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage; supporting the Employment Non-Discrimination Act; favouring a repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell; and adding sexual orientation to the definition of hate crimes.
