Gay rights activists in the UK have called for the government to allow a possible future gay royal couple to take the throne, reports Britain’s Daily Mail.

The call comes as the government moves to overhaul laws governing the Monarchy in order to give female royals equal right to the throne; male royals currently take priority over females.

It also plans to remove the restriction on members of the Royal Family from marrying Roman Catholics.

Gay rights group Stonewall said that the review of the legalisation was an opportune time to change the law to allow a future same-sex royal couple to ascend to the throne.

“I have little doubt that in 21st and 22nd Century Britain the public will judge the quality of their monarch by much more than their sexual orientation,” said Ben Summerskill, head of the organisation.
