MCCAIN’S WIFE, DAUGHTER BACK SAME-SEX MARRIAGE
The wife and daughter of 2008 Republican US presidential candidate Senator John McCain have come out in support of same-sex marriage.
Cindy and Meghan McCain have taken part in a photo shoot for the NOH8 campaign which aims to reverse the Proposition 8 ban on same-sex marriage in California.
The campaign features public figures and celebrities photographed with silver duct tape across their mouths and “NOH8” written on their faces.
The women’s position is in stark contrast to that of the senator’s, who said in a statement that, while he respects the view of his family, he “…believes the sanctity of marriage is only defined as between one man and one woman”.
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the largest LGBT civil rights organisation in the US, applauded Cindy and Meghan.
“We are deeply grateful to Mrs. McCain for proactively reaching out and offering her support of our community’s equality. In households throughout the country, families are talking about equality and minds are changing. The McCains are a prominent example, but they are not alone,” said Joe Solmonese, HRC President.
“Little by little, family member by family member, there is no doubt that our country is headed in the direction of full equality for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, and Cindy and Meghan McCain’s courageous decision to publicly stand up will certainly be a beacon for others to follow,” he said.
