GIRLS’ HOSTEL RE-OPENS
The Kwazulu Natal girl’s hostel that was closed after claims that pupils from Umthwalume high school were engaged in lesbian relationships has re-opened.
This follows a meeting on the weekend between parents, the school’s governing body and the Department of Education, reports Behind The Mask.
The department, while still investigating the matter, ordered the hostel to re-open.
“Children cannot be discriminated against on the basis of sexual orientation. Should this be true, the Department of Basic Education will not tolerate it,” said Hope Mokgatlhe from the National Department of Basic Education.
“But it is a different matter altogether if the children were found kissing or fornicating, which is misconduct and the school has the right to discipline the children on reasonable grounds.”
The hostel was reportedly closed after two pupils, who were found kissing, claimed that a number of other learners were lesbian and in lesbian relationships.
