RAMP DIVAS TO CLOSE ITS DOORS
After seven years, one of Joburg’s longest running gay nightclubs will be closing its doors at the end of October.
The announcement was made in a message sent to the Ramp Diva’s Facebook group by the club’s co-owner Kayce Keyser following weeks of speculation about the venue’s future.
“Sad but true – South Africa’s ultimate gay clubbing venue, Ramp Divas will be closing its doors on the 31st of October,” said Keyser.
Sources said that the Boksburg venue’s clientele had shown a marked decline of late and that new liquor laws limiting alcohol sale to 2am had also impacted the club.
Keyser added that a press release about Ramp Diva’s closure will be issued soon but he urged club-goers to celebrate the club’s history over the next three weeks.
Ramp Divas will host its final three parties on 16 October (Last days of Disco Party), 23 October (Breaking Down the Walls Party) and 31 October (Halloween – The Final Curtain).
The club will also be open on Wednesdays and Fridays, with free entry, until the end of the month.

It has become an institution of sorts. More and more the gay community has fewer places to be themselves and thus fewer rights.

Liquor law?. If gay clubs can’t survive because of the 2AM cutoff time, then I’d love to know how the “straight” clubs are doing. Methinks gay clubbing sinketh into the abyss in Joburg!
The Big Pink Bull’s Eye. How do straight clubs do it? Easy. They maintain a straight clientel. Queer clubs make an easy target. After all, unless you have a Camp of Queens threatening to beat the fuzz into a soggy mass with weighted handbags, the cops can, pretty much, intimidate at will.

Risque is not so exclusive: it doesnt even have a proper roof, that thatched straight joint has seen the last of its days. Oh and dear OR Tambo is in the East: the very point of departure to cities such as Paris, Milan and New York.
Close the borders!. Where on earth are these Ekurhuleni queens going to shake their booty now? This rather rough bunch of fairies is going to invade the posher north and west, not to mention Centurion. I hope they close the borders and keep them south of the N12. I am from the south and would just love to have them here. Nothing like a manly man from the east rand to get my natural lubrication going.
